The Infj Must Ignore Their Own Brain (When This Happens)

The Infj Must Ignore Their Own Brain (When This Happens) explores key ideas related to psychology, presented clearly and practically.

The mind of an INFJ is known to be one of their

most prized assets. With incredible abilities,

their imaginative thoughts and problem-solving

observations serve them in ways that others

their favor. In fact, sometimes it’s best

if they simply tell their brain to shut it!

Welcome or welcome back PSYCH-Os! Before we get

into it, we’d love it if you liked and subscribe

Alright, let’s get right into it, starting with..

Oh.. the inner battle between connecting with

their outer world and staying in the comfort of

their cozy solitude. Ask any INFJ if they know

the struggle and they will tell you it’s one

they’ve dealt with since they can remember. For

this introverted personality type, it’s natural

to want to spend their spare hours with their

3 best friends: me, myself, and I. In fact,

without this crucial rest time where they detach

from their outer world and responsibilities,

this personality is simply not themselves.

Usually, their inner minds and energy levels

promptly let them know when they’re in need of

a little reboot. However, with their interest

in keeping the entire synergistic system afloat,

sometimes this inner voice tries to convince the

INFJ that solitude comes above everything else.

It tells them that socializing with friends,

trying something new or pushing past their

comfort zone by any means is just not worth

prefers to stay comfortable in their own company

to follow suit. Yet, too much of anything isn’t

healthy, and sometimes ignoring this inner voice

turns out to be the most fulfilling option.

Now, comfort and safety isn’t always the motive

of the INFJ’s inner voice. As a matter of fact,

sometimes the reasoning behind this internal

commentary is far more harsh than initially

realized. Sometimes, these thoughts are there

for no other reason than to discourage the INFJ

from achieving something they set their mind

to. Whether it be rooted in imposter syndrome,

self-doubts, the critical component of the

INFJ’s mind lurks in the background, whispering

disheartening remarks. Sometimes they're quiet and

easily ignored, other times, they take up their

entire focus, making it nearly impossible to pedal

forward. Unfortunately, the more they succumb

to these inner beliefs, the louder they grow;

and this is what makes ignoring them so crucial.

Sometimes all it takes is the leap forward despite

their mind, in order to prove to themselves just

how little power these thoughts have over them.

Sure, the INFJ’s harsh inner critic is usually

the one to talk them out of a dreamed endeavor,

but that’s not always the case. In fact, sometimes

it’s the same critical voice that also tells them

they need to push further, make things better,

and aim for higher than their soul is asking them

to. Ironically, in some ways, this disapproving

commentary serves as the INFJ’s main motivator in

life, pushing them far past what they believed

they were capable of. These are the times when

listening to their minds serves them in a positive

manner. On the other side of the spectrum,

however, the INFJ will find this inner voice

to be the thing that pushes them to burnout and

negative self-talk. Depending on where the INFJ

is at in life, their inner minds can convince

them that they should be much further than they

are. These thoughts consist of self-comparisons,

past goals that weren’t quite reached, and an

unsteady eagerness to succeed. It’s far from

encouraging, coming across as rather tormenting

in nature. These are the ideas the INFJ must push

to the side in order to avoid spiraling into

a self-deprecating hole of burnout and apathy.

Empathetic at heart and mind, it takes the

INFJ a long time to learn how to effectively

set boundaries around their altruism. For this

extroverted feeler type, it seems easier to

continue to pour themselves into those who need

it, despite the difficulties entailed, than to

simply keep their kindness within limits. They

have a difficult time communicating these needs

to others not only for the fear of disappointing,

but also because it would eat at their guilty mind

for far longer than they’d like to admit. In fact,

it’s not until a situation comes along where their

lack of boundaries gives them a major reality

check that shakes them to the core that they

realize just how important it is to build this

necessary skill. This is exactly when ignoring

the corresponding self-made guilt trip becomes so

necessary. Teaching themselves that detaching from

these extroverted feeler notions of guilt is a

necessary part of the process, saving their future

selves from being hurt or trying to pour from an

empty cup. Which brings us to our next point..

There comes a time in every INFJ’s life where

their over-giving and over-excursion sends them

on a fast-track to a daunting internal-loop. Known

as the Ni-Ti/ introverted intuition-introverted

thinking loop, when the INFJ is overwhelmed with

life, they can end in a subconscious state where

they focus solely on their introverted functions,

detaching from their outer world completely.

Whether it be due to a traumatic event or overall

burnout, when they retreat from the outer world

and stop interacting with people or objects around

them, they become uncharacteristically cold,

withdrawn, and prone to impulsive acts. In a

subconscious effort to shake themselves out of

this internal rut, their mind may encourage them

to lean on their inferior cognitive function,

extraverted sensing. In a normal state of mind,

interacting with this function can ground them in

a healthy way. However, in a state of depletion,

this can turn into a ‘stress grip reaction’,

impulsive, detrimental decisions. Their mind

may convince them that indulgence, recklessness,

and overlooking their long-range focus and vision

is the quick fix they need, when in reality, they

need to ignore this internal advice completely.

So, what do INFJs resort to in such a time of

mental despair and exhaustion? REST! While one

component of the INFJ’s multi-faceted mind can

lead them into a cycle of too much relaxation,

convinces them that rest is simply laziness

in disguise. It’s the thoughts that surface when

the INFJ isn’t doing something productive with

their time. It’s the inner voice that yells at

them to get up and wash the dishes when they’re

enjoying an episode of their favorite netflix

series. The voice that tells them that reading

a book doesn’t seem logical when they should

be buying groceries. It’s the voice that keeps

them up at night, running through all of the

tasks of the following day. Despite knowing

just how important rest is to their entire

system, still, this inner critic persists,

sometimes leaving the INFJ just as mentally

exhausted as before their attempt to relax.

INFJs are known for their inferior intuition

which gives them insights that others don’t have

the wits to relate to. Without these intuitive

hunches, INFJs simply wouldn't be able to analyze,

to quietly take the place of these relied-on

hunches. An intruder that the INFJ has been

tricked by many times before. This is the wolf

in sheep's clothing that comes in to convince

the INFJ to think certain things despite the

actual intuitive feelings that often accompany

such thoughts. It’s the assumptions that come as

a byproduct of the INFJ’s inner fears and beliefs,

most often involving their trust of other people.

For the INFJ, it’s the voice that convinces them

that a loved one is being unfaithful, that

a friend is being untruthful, or that a new

acquaintance has ill intentions behind their

friendly demeanor. It’s the voice that haunts

them until they dig further on a matter that

wasn’t built on the basis of truth in the first

place. It can make them closed off to those they

love, wrongfully accusatory, and can ultimately

make them feel crazy when they’re not able to

find factual evidence to their intruding hunches.

Well PSYCH-Os, that’s it for today.. So, do

you think it’s wise to ignore your mind at

times as an INFJ? Let us know in the comments
