7 Things All Infps Should Stop Doing

7 Things All Infps Should Stop Doing explores key ideas related to psychology, presented clearly and practically.

The idealistic INFP personality type certainly

comes with a few habits that can cause them to

self-sabotage their happiness and success

in life. While most INFPs measure success

in terms of living a moral, beautiful, and

virtuous life, their passionate outlook on

life doesn’t always match reality.. And this is

where the INFP can avoid a few negative habits.

Welcome or welcome back Psych-o! Today we’re

going to be talking about the 7 things all INFPs

successful in life. Before we get into it,

Alright, let’s get right into it starting with..

If you’re an INFP yourself, you probably knew this

one was coming.. So why not get it out of the way.

With a desperation to please and a willingness

to put down their own views in order to assist

others, the INFP can easily set their goals and

dreams on the back burner. Spouses, parents,

friends, colleagues, bosses, and the list goes

on.. Everyone wants a say in what other people do,

especially if they think they’re helping guide

someone in the right direction. Every INFP has

probably been advised at some point to bite

the bullet, get a secure job, work towards that

promotion, or strive towards some other outcome

that doesn’t sit right with them. Newsflash INFPs,

you probably know what's best for you, no matter

how convincing others can be. Of course it’s

difficult to disappoint others, especially being

a type with such avoidance towards conflict..

But it’s not in the INFP’s nature to conform.

A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that if

you truly want to shape your life according

to your own definition of success, you will

almost always end up disappointing someone.

Number 2: Stop looking for the next best project

INFPs have a particular habit of picking up

new interests when previous interests become

challenging or boring. I mean it doesn’t sound

like all that detrimental of a habit considering

it encourages the INFP to constantly be trying new

things. However, when it comes to true happiness

and success, the INFP getting restless too easily

may be the underlying cause. While it’s great to

leave the door open to new possibilities, it’s

equally important to know how to narrow the focus

onto one or two areas. INFPs specifically

need to actively focus in order to be truly

productive - but most people with this type

know that buckling down to get things down is

quite tortuous to say the least. This is when

it’s easiest to choose 1 project to focus on,

with the goal of diving deeper. Whether it’s

a business idea, a passionate hobby, or a

potential partnership that you’d like to hold on

to, once INFPs find something they can dive into,

focus doesn’t become that difficult of an issue.

Number 3: Stop trying to control, control, control

Most things in life are out of our control,

and because of this, everyday there’s an INFP

idealistic view that isn't met. Empathetic and

generous, the INFP personality type is born with a

compelling drive to make the world a better place.

While this helps them find purpose and meaning in

this world, the INFP sometimes turns to their

sense of control in hopes to achieve that goal.

Acting like the backseat driver in most scenarios,

while the INFP is not completely in control,

they feel an urge to delegate directions due

to a fear that if they don’t, the driver will

crash the car. In other words, INFPs feel safe in

control, and utterly exhausted when they’re not.

Yet, in the end, control is just an illusion -

and that can set the INFP up for some serious

disappointment, not to mention unique relationship

challenges. Without resolving this habit, INFPs

will never feel truly happy or confident in their

day-to-day, often leaving them feeling paralyzed

and confused about what to do with their lives.

Number 4: Stop distrusting your intuition

With extroverted intuition being the INFPs

secondary function, it’s not uncommon for

this type to overlook instinctual feelings when

making decisions in life.. But that doesn't mean

that intuitive hunch isn’t there. In fact, this

extroverted intuition matched with their dominant

introverted feeling function acts to guide the

INFP in a very unique way. Most people with this

imaginative type instinctively know when something

they’re doing feels wrong. They may not know

exactly why something is off, but they certainly

know that there’s something. This is the feeling

that cannot be ignored! This inner feeling isn’t

doubt, uncertainty or lack of self confidence - it

is a sheer push into the right direction.. If you

decide to trust it, that is.. In fact, one of the

only things that separates a successful INFP from

a less-successful INFP is trusting this intuition

enough to make necessary life changes, even when

the changes seem unfamiliar or downright crazy.

Intuition is powerful, some may even call it

magical.. And while learning to trust your gut

can be life changing, it isn’t going to always

sweeten life’s bitter lessons. INFP’s inner

world’s are filled with passion, creativity, and

idealistic imagination - where things are bloomed

through sheer thought. However, when the INFP

opens their eyes to their surrounding reality,

they quickly realize that magic and miracles

aren't exactly what makes up this world we

call home. And because of this, it can be

difficult for INFPs to really understand that

when they want something to happen, they’re

going to have to wake up with the purpose of

making it happen everyday. Overnight success

is a myth.. and even rare or admirable talents

don’t spare people from this harsh reality.

fairytale-like visions and hopeful wishes

for some knitty gritty hard work and effort.

Number 6: Stop waiting for the perfect moment

Speaking of hopeful wishes.. Hoping to find that

perfect moment to take the first step towards a

goal is exactly that.. wishful thinking. In

fact, productivity coach Alli Worthington,

waiting for that perfect moment is nothing more

than a sign of procrastination. Whether it’s

walking into a new project, or walking away

from something that no longer serves them,

the INFP benefits from learning how to identify

their moments of procrastination.. As they can

easily sneak their way in for personality types

that think so much. INFPs need to keep in mind

that a bad job won’t get better waiting around for

a new boss to take over. And a bad relationship

won’t turn into a great relationship once you get

better at tolerating a partner’s inadequacies..

but shining a light on the reasons behind

procrastination can make all the difference.

Number 7: Stop inviting the worse-case-scenario

The INFP mind is all rainbows and optimism..until

they’re challenged to make an important decision.

Just as we were talking about finding the

must stop inviting the worst-case-scenario to

their decision making process. Most INFPs have

the habit of allowing insecurities, anxieties and

even overall moodiness get in the way of pursuing

and staying committed to certain opportunities.

imaginary scenarios of future outcomes. When

their idea is still just in the idea phase,

optimism and excitement flood their imaginations,

allowing more optimistic looking outcomes. Yet

that they’re already bored with, these imagined

future outcomes become doubtful. In these times

specifically, INFPs create imaginary obstacles and

paranoid worst-case-scenarios that make it easier
